Mac Domhnaill comes from the personal name Domhnall, made up of two words meaning ‘world’ and ‘strong’. It is very common in the northern province of Ulster, and also in the area which was the Kingdom of Thomond around counties Limerick and Clare. There, the Mc Donnells were hereditary poets to the royal O’ Brien clan. The name is one of the 100 most numerous surnames in Ireland, and is particularly popular in the county of Fermanagh in the north.

The hand knit Mc Donnell sweater has a moss filled diamond as the central panel, flanked by braid, cables, and a panel of blackberry on either side. The diamonds symbolise a wish for wealth, the cables a wish for good luck and the blackberry is representative of the Holy Trinity. This beautiful Aran sweater has been hand knitted in the traditional báinín (pronounced ‘baw neen’) colour, the natural white of the wool. It comes to you complete with a clan history and crest. It is made of 100% pure new wool, is water repellent and breathable. It has been hand crafted in the traditional Irish style, and, with care, will last a lifetime.
