My first visit to Ireland, did not know about the Aran sweathers until my recent travels which took me to the Galway City area. My late husband is a fourth generation Farrell, so will now start researching the Farrell clan . Just learning about the history of his forefathers being woven into a sweather and the meaning of the stitches as identity is certainly pride in an Irish heritage.

Hello. 1st time visitor. 6 og us went to Ireland on CIE tours in July '08, and had a brilliant time. My mother's parents, John McNulty and Briget Foy, were from Donnegal, and my daughter & son-in-law, my husband and I went to the towns of their birth. and sent postcards back to my sisters postmarked Balleybofey. Had lots of craic in a pub in Donnegal called "The Real Pub". Wish we had something like that here in NJ.

Thanks so much for the quick response--I love the sweater ! ! It is the most beautiful sweater I have ever seen, much less actually owned. I can't tell you how truly thrilled I am with my Clan Aran sweater. Thank you so much. I expect that you will be hearing from my "Irish friends" here in Minnesota and Illinois after they get to see it for the first time. Thanks again for all the help.

I married into the McCarter name. I knit and would love to make an aran sweater for him, but he hasn't liked any of the patterns I've picked out. I happened upon this site and he was jacked to the moon. Said he would love to have one like these. My only problem is that we can't seem to find his familial name or crest. He told me that his crest has a cross in it. Would his name be a SUB group of a larger family? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

My new husband Michael and I visited the Aran Island during our honeymoon. It was on your island that I found out my name had history, a clan as well as the symbol and meaning of my last name. I unfortunately didn't marry an Irishman but he did take me to Ireland to see where my family came from. Thanks to all of wonderful people we met while on the island. It was the highlight of our trip! Kelly (still using my true last name) Moran

Hi, I am in the process of checking into the family tree. My grandmother's name was Annie Cronin from Cork, my grandfather was Tommy O'Neill (he was raised in an orphanage). They moved to Canada in the early 1915 to 1918. He changed the last name to Young, & eventually settled in Montreal. Anyone with information, I would be happy to hear from. This is a great site & I wish I could afford a sweater, perhaps when I find out more about the family a trip to Ireland would be in the cards.

Last christmas I received a pattern and wool from my brother and sister in law. I have recently finished my sweater and of all the crafting and knitting projects over the years ( and there have been alot) I am most pleased with my beautiful Aran sweater. I did email you folks looking to adapt the pattern into a cardigan. You were not able to offer that service so it challenged me to do it myself. I was able to easily adapt it. Thank you for a fun great project. Do you offer pattern sized for children.

My grandmother (Catherine Fahey) is from Galway. Grandfather (James Twomey) is from Cork. On my fifth birthday my grandmother gave me an Irish Cable knit sweater she knitted herself. It was beautiful. I have not had one since then. In three years I will make a trip to the Aran Islands for my second sweater. It will be my present to me on my 65th birthday. Of course I will visit both counties of my heritage. I want to take in as much of Ireland as I can. I found a few places to stay while in Galway (March Cottage and the Store). If you know of any others please let me know. Thank you.

I'm Captain Larry Gross, recently moved from Key West, FL to Ireland, WV. Ancestry is half Irish and half German. The Irish side are Cavenaugh, Clark and Sullivan. Ancestry includes a 4 or 5 generation back grandfather, Captain John Cavenaugh who he and his brother left Wexford to fight in the battle of Derry. His brother got killed and he then settled in Donegal, becoming a sea captain. Modern DNA has traced 2 of my aunts and 3 first cousins to a King Cavenaugh who ruled the area of Wexford around the year 900 A.D.

Hello, I met Rosaleen in Milwaukee, WI just yesterday, Saturday, Aug. 16th. What a wonderful and talented woman. She worked hard and spent so much of her life getting the information found at this site. I so very, very, much appreciate all of her hard work. My maternal great-grandparents both migrated from Ireland. County Mayo and Cty. Wexford. I have felt a strong connection with them although we never met on this earth. I have also started knitting. So here is another way for me to connect with my ancesterial history. Thank you Rosaleen for allowing me to find out more about my Murphy and Nolan family history. Warmly, Theresa Kasdorf

My parents told me we were of Irish decent on both sides of the family.I have traced some of my ancestors and they are indeed Irish but one grandfather put the place of birth of his father on the census as being Gates. Is this of any significance to anyone ?

I have a little bit of information on my family, but have hit a dead-end. My great-great grandfather was William Percy, the second son of Lord John? Percy. William was disinherited for marrying the gate-keeper's daughter (Sarah Boyd). I would love to have a Clanaran sweater, but you don't have one for Percy. Was the name changed? Is there a different clan I should be looking for?

Your website is lovely. I treasure my Irish sweaters. I have five, all handknitted in Ireland but purchased at T.J. Maxx. My family name is McGovern but did not see it on the list, is it a version of another name ? I grew up in Woodside, a town in Queens, NY. I always thought it was the "little Ireland" of NY. Every other child in my grammer school (St. Sebastian's) was Irish. In fact I noticed many of their names on your list. I love Irish music and films. I would love to purchase sweaters or patterns once I know which one represents my family name. Never been to Ireland but it's on my "bucket list".
