Happy St. Patricks Day to all my Irish brothers and sisters! My father's people, with the surname of Britt, came from Sligo and Tipperary in early 1800's and settled in Kingston, New York. The relative I have that came from Ireland is, Charles Wesley Britt and his family. Before that, the names were Welsh and Herdman. I love doing genealogy and if anyone knows of the Britt family, I'd love to hear from you! Do you have a sweater in the Britt name?

My Grandmother Came on the Orphan Train from NY to Iowa sometime around 1885 after the June 30th 1885 censue in Iowa and before Oct. 1890. Then she and 3 other boys came together on the Orphan Train and where Adopted/Raised by two Shea, O'Shea families in Volga, Clayton county, Iowa. Edward and Mary Shea and his father William Shea in Sherry Township, Iowa. My Grandmother known as Bessie from the Orphan Train said her parents where Irish. Her father is from Nothern Ireland, Potatoe Land. Through the years of trying to do research on her Family Tree. I ran across the 1925 Census showing up her father as Michael Vernon, and mother unknown. She also told me that she had a brother named Michael. I haven't been able to find anything else on the Vernon Family from Ireland, or what city, county they came from in Northern Ireland. I am lately collection Irish items for my apartment, and want clothing to wear. Even Knit or Crochet.

I KNOW I HAVE IRISH BLOOD IN MY HISTORY, BUT CAN'T FIND WHICH SIDE OF THE FAMILY IT IS ON. THIS IS FUSTRATING. THERE WERE 4 IRISH BROTHERS THAT WERE GIVEN A LAND GRANT BY THE KING OF ENGLAND MANY, MANY, MANY YEARS AND IT WAS ON THE ORIGINAL SHEEP SKIN. THE LAND WAS FOR SOMEWHERE IN PENNSYLVANIA. THE BROTHERS DIVIDED IT UP AS THE STORY GOES. TWO OF THE BROTHERS MARRIED WHITE WOMEN AND THE OTHER 2 MARRIED INDIANS. THAT IS ALL I KNOW. THIS WAS PASSED DOWN TO ME FROM MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER WHEN I WAS VERY YOUNG. I KNOW MY MOTHER HAS SOME PAPERS FROM THE 1700 HUNDREDS BUT THE WRITING IS SO VERY HARD TO READ. HOPEFULLY I WILL BE ABLE TO FIND SOMETHING FROM THOSE. I REALLY DO LOVE YOUR SITE. EVERY ST. PATRICKS DAY ON "QVC" THEY HAVE 24 HOURS OF ALL KINDS OF THINGS FROM IRELAND. I'VE PURCHASED MANY SWEATERS AND CONNAMARA MARBLE ITEMS (RINGS, BRACELETS, EARRINGS, ETC.) EVERYTHING HAS BEEN BEAUTIFUL.

Thank you so much. One of my daughters married an into the Curtis family from Boston. I was disappointed not to be able t find their clan pattern in your listing. Maybe you will discover it and post it in the near future. Another daughter married a Sullivan and this you do have which makes me very happy. My maiden name, as indicated above, is Mayo. Having the devil of a time finding any information relating to my Irish heritage. Wouldn't you think, with a whole Irish County named after us, it would be easy? Even finding out if it's a derivative of another Irish surname would give me a place to start. Perhaps we have a sweater pattern of our own! Thanks for the history of the Aran sweater.

No Sweater from the Heffernan clan? I spent most of last September in Ireland. My sister and I searched our roots, and the yarn stores. Knitting stores were scarce, they export their wool to China. To anyone going to search roots, I would suggest getting all the info you can at home first. The "Heritage Centers" are stingy with their info, and even some of the church records are not released for viewing. We had more luck at the local level, in the library. The trip was fantastic, we took a bus tour first for a week, then set out on our own. We brought back generic aran sweaters, but would love to know if there is one for our family.

I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that specific patterns of knitting identified the clans - somewhat similar to the tartan plaids. This is very entertaining for me and very much fun. I can only claim to be Irish on March 17th every year, but I appreciate the beauty of Ireland every day! and I'm glad to have learned a little more about the wonderful isle by visiting your website.

Came upon this site by accident, but am glad that I did as I am Irish/Indian (don't know what tribe) and like the other fellow who wrote earlier, I too, do not know from which clan I am from on the Irish side. So if anyone has any info about the O'Sullivan's or as they have it here in the U.S., Sullivan; please let me know. It is a life dream of mine to some day visit my homeland of Ireland. Also, I'd love to acquire a penpal from Ireland also if anyone is interested. Nothing romantic or anything, just friends chatting across the waters. Thanks for your time.

Hi I'm From Belfast i'm very surprised to see no aran sweaters for some of my family names. I came to Canada in 1973 but at home i knitted a lot of Aran Sweaters for family members, myself and my children. There is nothing more beautiful than owning a pure aran sweater. I go back home every year this year i will bring the aran wool back to knit for my grandchildren.

I just happened to find your website and found it very interesting. I think my relatives of many years ago moved here and they were from Bray, Ireland. I did not find a clan on your list by that name. I am planning on visiting Ireland sometime in 2009. It will be my first visit.

Hi! I am from Indianapolis, Indiana (USA). I just came across your website and think the sweaters are really beautiful. I am a new knitter (since June of '07) and so far I've made over 40 scarves, but am ready to graduate to hats anyday! I would love to be able to knit a beautiful sweater one day, but for now I will be happy to just purchase one of yours. I will be ordering as soon as my tax returns arrive, and I will be sure to share this website with others.

I am Irish by descent and have many relatives living in Ireland. My daughter and I visited Ireland three years ago for a holiday for a month and travelled all over the island, I really enjoyed and loved the country and hope to revisit one day. Knitting is a passion of mine, and really do love the aran knits.

Your Aran designs are very attractive; and I learned a lot about the designs and their meanings. We always had Aran sweaters when i was growing up but I never knew that certain designs were indigenous to certain clans until today. I have found two designs that I could wear as i am descended from Irish folk on my mother's side. I will be back to buy at least three of your sweaters before next winter I hope!! Wish I had found this site before my visit to West Virginia on 8th Feb. '08!!
