DAVID, as to what I was told by older relatives Orginally he came from NYACK, NY he married a African American woman named Mary Freeman, they moved from Nyack in the 1900's toward Paterson, NJ then from there to West Orange, NJ then finally to Orange , NJ where they had two daughters named Margaret and Ethel and a son named Clifford. He had two children. I know his daughter was 16 years old in 1859 when president Lincoln was on the campain trail. She saw him in Bloomington , IN on the back of a train. I know her daughter ( my grand mother) was named Leota and she married a man from West Verginia named Wellington Dean Knapp around the first decade of the 20th century. They had five children: James (Jay) born 1912, a daughter, I don't know her name, that died in the 1950s, Bettie Jane born 1920, John (jack) born 1924s, and Barbara Joanne (Jo) born 1926.
